Down

Now playing

The now-playing screen spreads the cover across the top half and carries its colour all the way down to the bottom of the screen.

The title and artist stay put when the song changes, with two lines of lyrics underneath, the line being sung in bold serif and the next one a size smaller. To leave, pull the page down and it slides away under your finger.

Lyrics

The lyrics screen has three styles, Focus, Flow and Vertical, and you can switch between them while the song plays.

Focus enlarges the line being sung, Flow moves the whole lyric up with the song, and Vertical sets it top to bottom and right to left in Source Han Serif, keeping punctuation off the top of a column. Songs without embedded lyrics can use an .lrc file.

A poem for the hour

The greeting at the top of the home screen comes with a line of poetry that changes with the time of day and the season.

The day is split into early morning, midday, afternoon, evening and late night. The Chinese interface picks from 37 lines of Tang and Song poetry and the Japanese one from 22 haiku and waka, so the line can change every hour. The standby clock and the greeting widget use the same choice.

Standby clock

Set your phone down sideways and the music keeps playing while the screen turns into a large clock.

Choose between time with music, a centred clock and a lyric wall, set the digits in any of LK Sans's four weights or Source Han Serif, and turn on seconds without the hours and minutes moving. Tap the screen for settings and close, and they tuck themselves away after four seconds.

More features

The other things you reach for every day are there too, and a long library still scrolls smoothly.

Design

Every screen in LK MUSIC starts from the cover of the song that is playing, and its colour, type, button layout and motion are all worked out from there.

  1. The page takes its base colour from the bottom strip of the cover and adds a thin veil of the same hue, only as much as white text needs, so you never see where the cover ends and the page begins.

  2. Interface text is set in the studio's own LK Sans and lyrics switch to Source Han Serif. When the song changes the title stays where it is while the lyrics move up a line at a time.

  3. Both rows of buttons share one set of column widths, so the queue sits directly under play and the sleep timer directly under previous.

  4. Menus and dialogs are white frosted glass with no outline, and they open with a short, quiet fade instead of zooming or bouncing.
